What To Do When Your AC Stops Working in the Florida Summer
There are few things worse than your AC going out in the middle of a Florida summer. One minute you’re comfortable, the next your house feels like the inside of a car parked in the sun. If your system just stopped working, or is barely keeping up, here’s exactly what to do before you panic.
First, Don’t Panic
Most AC problems have a simple explanation. Before you assume the worst, work through these steps. You might be able to get things running again without a service call!
Check These Things First
- Your thermostat. It sounds obvious but it’s the first place to look. Make sure it’s set to cool, the temperature is set below the current room temperature, and the fan is set to auto. If you have a smart thermostat, check whether it lost its Wi-Fi connection or reset itself.
- Your circuit breaker. Go to your electrical panel and look for a tripped breaker. AC units are hard on electrical systems, especially in the summer heat. If the breaker is tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, stop. That’s a sign of a bigger electrical issue and you should call us.
- Your air filter. A clogged filter is one of the most common reasons an AC system shuts down or stops cooling effectively. If your filter is grey and packed with dust, swap it out and give the system 15 to 20 minutes to recover.
- Your outdoor unit. Go outside and look at your condenser, the big unit that sits outside your home. Is it running? Is there ice on the lines or the unit itself? If you see ice, turn the system off and let it thaw for a few hours before turning it back on. Running a frozen unit can cause serious damage to the compressor.
- Your drain line. Florida humidity means your AC pulls a lot of moisture out of the air, and that water has to go somewhere. If your condensate drain line gets clogged, most modern systems will shut off automatically to prevent water damage. Check the drain pan under your air handler for standing water.
When It’s Time to Call a Pro
If you’ve worked through the list above and your system still isn’t cooling, it’s time to call. A few signs that something more serious is going on:
- The system turns on but blows warm air
- You hear unusual noises like grinding, banging, or hissing
- You see ice on the unit or refrigerant lines
- The breaker keeps tripping
- The system short cycles, turns on and off rapidly
- Your home hasn’t cooled down at all after 30 minutes of running
These are all signs that the issue is beyond a filter swap or a reset. A trained technician can diagnose and repair most problems the same day.
What To Expect From a Service Call
When you call Rocket Cooling, here’s what happens. We’ll schedule your appointment, including evenings and weekends if needed, and your technician will arrive, diagnose the issue, and walk you through exactly what’s going on and what it will take to fix it. No guessing, no pressure, no surprises.
If your system needs a repair, we carry common parts on our trucks so many repairs can be handled on the first visit. If your system is older and the repair cost doesn’t make sense, we’ll be honest with you about that too.
A Note on Older Systems
If your AC is 12 to 15 years old or more and it breaks down in the middle of summer, you’re going to face a decision: repair it or replace it. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but here’s a good rule of thumb: if the repair cost is more than half the cost of a new system, and your unit is already aging, replacement is usually the smarter investment. A new system will be more efficient, more reliable, and will cost you less to run every month.

Don’t Wait It Out in the Heat
Florida summer heat is not something to tough out, especially for elderly family members, young children, or pets. If your AC goes out and can’t be fixed same day, get somewhere cool: a family member’s home, a hotel, or a mall, while you wait for your repair appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my AC suddenly stop working? The most common reasons are a tripped circuit breaker, a clogged air filter, a frozen coil, or a clogged condensate drain line. Start with those before assuming it’s a major repair.
What do I do if my AC is running but not cooling? First check your air filter and make sure your thermostat is set correctly. If the system is running but blowing warm air, you may have a refrigerant issue, a dirty coil, or a failing compressor, all of which need a professional diagnosis.
Why is my AC freezing up in Florida? A frozen AC is usually caused by restricted airflow from a dirty filter, low refrigerant, or a dirty evaporator coil. Turn the system off and let it thaw completely before turning it back on. If it freezes again, call a technician.
How long should it take for my AC to cool my house in Florida? In normal conditions, a properly functioning AC should lower the temperature about 1 to 2 degrees per hour. If your home isn’t cooling after 30 to 45 minutes of running, something is off.
Does Rocket Cooling offer emergency AC repair in Florida? Yes. Rocket Cooling offers 24/7 emergency AC repair service across Florida. You can call us anytime or book online at rocketcooling.com.
How much does AC repair cost in Florida? Repair costs vary depending on the issue. Minor repairs like a capacitor or contactor replacement are typically a few hundred dollars. More significant repairs like a compressor or refrigerant recharge can run higher. We always diagnose the issue first and walk you through the cost before any work begins, no surprises.
