Why Your Electric Bill Spikes in May (And What Your AC Has to Do With It)

If you’ve noticed your electric bill creeping up and summer hasn’t even fully kicked in yet, you’re not imagining it. May is actually one of the biggest turning points for energy costs in Florida, and your AC is almost always the reason why.

Here’s what’s actually happening and what you can do about it.

Florida’s Heat Doesn’t Wait for June

Most of the country thinks of summer as a June through August thing. In Florida, we know better. By May, daytime temps are regularly pushing into the upper 80s and low 90s, humidity is climbing, and your AC is running for hours at a stretch just to keep your home at a comfortable temperature.

That extended runtime is the biggest driver of your rising electric bill. Your system isn’t broken, it’s just working a lot harder than it was in February.

Your AC Is Your Biggest Energy User

In a typical Florida home, air conditioning accounts for roughly 40 to 50 percent of your total energy use. During peak summer months that number can climb even higher. So when your bill jumps $50, $75, or even $100 from one month to the next, your AC is almost always the place to look first.

Why Some Systems Cost More to Run Than Others

Not all AC systems are created equal when it comes to energy efficiency. A few things that can cause your system to use more electricity than it should:

A dirty or clogged filter. This is the most common one. When airflow is restricted, your system runs longer to reach the same temperature. A simple filter swap can make a noticeable difference.

A system that hasn’t been serviced. Over time, coils get dirty, refrigerant levels shift, and components wear down. A system that’s even slightly out of tune uses more energy to do the same job. Annual maintenance helps keep it running at its best.

An oversized or undersized system. A system that’s the wrong size for your home will cycle inefficiently, use more energy, and struggle to control humidity on top of it.

An aging system. Older units, especially those over 10 to 15 years old, are significantly less efficient than modern equipment. If your system is aging, the energy cost difference between keeping it and replacing it is often bigger than homeowners expect. Not sure how much you could be saving? Try our Energy Savings Estimator to get a quick idea of what a newer, more efficient system could mean for your monthly bill.

Leaky ducts or poor insulation. If your home isn’t holding the cool air your system produces, it runs longer to compensate. Your AC can be in perfect shape and still drive up your bill if the air is escaping through your attic or walls.

Humidity Makes It Worse

Florida’s humidity doesn’t just feel uncomfortable, it makes your AC work harder. Your system has to remove moisture from the air on top of cooling it, which adds to runtime and energy use. If your home feels sticky even when the AC is running, that’s a sign your system may be struggling to keep up with the humidity load.

A whole home dehumidifier can take that pressure off your AC and help your home feel more comfortable at a higher thermostat setting, which means lower energy costs overall.

Small Habits That Help

A few things that can take the edge off your bill without sacrificing comfort:

  • Keep your thermostat at 78 degrees or higher when you’re home and bump it up a few degrees when you’re away
  • Use ceiling fans to help circulate air – they make a room feel cooler without lowering the temperature
  • Keep blinds and curtains closed during peak sun hours, especially on south and west facing windows
  • Make sure your outdoor unit has clear airflow with at least two feet of space around it
  • Change your filter regularly – once a month during peak summer is a good habit in Florida

The Best Way to Keep Costs in Check All Summer

The single most effective thing you can do is make sure your system is running efficiently before the heat really settles in. A professional maintenance visit catches small issues before they turn into big ones, helps your system run at peak efficiency, and gives you peace of mind heading into the hottest months of the year.

If you haven’t had your system serviced recently, or if your bill is already climbing faster than expected, it’s worth having one of our techs take a look.
